Renovating a home is a big project, and it can lead to a significant amount of garbage and debris over the course of several weeks. Managing the garbage can be a project in and of itself. It’s unlikely your municipal garbage disposal will accept a massive amount of materials, and multiple trips to the landfill will take time and money.
This is where a dumpster rental can help. Dumpster rentals make waste management a breeze, especially during a large project like a home remodel. With dumpster rentals, the only thing clients need to worry about is making sure the garbage finds its way to the dumpster. Everything else, including pick-up and delivery, is taken care of by your outdoor services company.
If you think a dumpster rental is the right option for your home remodel or roof replacement, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about renting one:
1. Start By Choosing Your Dumpster
Dumpsters come in many different sizes, and you’ll want to make sure to choose one that is capable of handling all of your garbage throughout the duration of your project. You’ll also want to consider how much space you have to store the dumpster. Common dumpster sizes range from 10 to 30 yards. If you’re going to be primarily disposing of heavy items (such as concrete), a smaller dumpster is generally recommended. If you need help determining the right size, get in touch with a reputable outdoor services company. They’ll be able to make a recommendation based on your unique project. If you get it wrong, don’t worry, you can always request a disposal / second dumpster.
2. Prepare The Delivery Site
It’s important your area is large enough to support the dumpster, and we generally recommend at least 3 to 4 feet of clearance on all sides. You’ll also need a minimum of 22 feet overhead, so you’ll want to make sure there are no low-hanging wires or tree branches near the dumpster. Finally, you’ll need to make sure your outdoor services company has clear access to the delivery site for drop-off and pick-up. Making sure the area is clear is important for the health and safety of everyone working on the project.
3. Arrange Logistics
Once you’ve decided on a size and prepared the delivery area, work with your outdoor service company to schedule delivery. If you’re unsure how long you’ll need the dumpster, don’t worry. The pick-up date is generally flexible; however, you can pre-schedule it as well. If you think you’ll need another dumpster during your project, give your service provider a call, and they’ll be happy to swap them out.
4. Pick-up And Disposal
Once you’re finished, your dumpster rental company will return to pick up the dumpster. Again, it’s important there is at least 36 feet of clear space in front of the dumpster to allow for pick-up. Afterward, the container will be taken to a local garbage center and all materials will be disposed of safely.
How To Safely Load A Dumpster
When disposing of garbage in the dumpster, you always want to try to place large, heavy, bulky items in first to ensure you’re able to utilize it to the full capacity. Most dumpsters have a fill-line near the top of the container, and it’s important not to exceed it. Dumpsters generally need to be covered when they’re on the road, so you don’t want it to be overflowing. Also, do not attempt to dispose of hazardous materials such as batteries, chemicals, electronics, or other prohibited items in the dumpster. Regular home renovation debris such as brick, drywall, carpet, tile, and furniture are accepted.
